Micro trenching guidance from Government and LGG

The message below is going in the LGG economy and transport bulletin, but LGG are keen to ensure it gets to all the right people in councils, because it thinks there is probably pressure on from DCMS to sign the contracts rather quickly and the people doing so may not be aware of the technical concerns about microtrenching.

The Department for Culture Media and Sport  http://www.culture.gov.uk/ - has released guidance http://www.culture.gov.uk/images/publications/Microtrenching_guidance_NOV2011.pdf.  for councils on the use of microtrenching techniques for the roll out of broadband. While the technique can be quick and cheap, it must only be used where appropriate to avoid damaging road surfaces unnecessarily and leading to large maintenance costs further down the line. If you are a councillor or officer who is concerned, has any queries, or would like to discuss further, please do not hesitate to get in contact with LGG. There is some pressure of authorities to agree contracts to roll out broadband quickly and we therefore suggest that officers responsible for road maintenance pro-actively contact the relevant department in their authority to ensure that those dealing with these contracts are aware of the risks that can be associated with this technique and the guidance on its application.
